Thanksgiving Road Trip?

The CDC recommends staying home this Thanksgiving holiday weekend, but if you have to travel, and you're traveling by road, here are some tips to help avoid car trouble far from home.

Perform pre-trip check to help ensure safety and reliability on the road:

  1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.

  2. Check the hoses and belts that can become loose, cracked, brittle, frayed, or showing signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the electrical system's proper functioning, air conditioning, power steering, and cooling system.

  3. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.

  4. Check lighting to identify any problems with exterior and interior lighting as the chance of an accident increases if you can't see or be seen.

  5. Check wipers. Wiper blades should be replaced every six months. Make sure the windshield wipers are working correctly and keep the reservoir filled with solvent.

Taking proper precautions now provides an opportunity to have any repairs performed before hitting the road.

Before hitting the open road this Thanksgiving Day Weekend, add some car maintenance to the road-trip planner to ensure no mechanical issues come up.
